T-BERD/MTS 8000 (TB/MTS 8000) Transport module

As service providers expand their offerings into new data and wavelength services, test requirements are also expanding beyond traditional SONET and T-Carrier technologies into Data and Optical layer technologies. Service providers are now responsible for installing and maintaining new network elements and service types that were not present in legacy networks.

The T-BERD/MTS 8000 (TB/MTS 8000) Transport module addresses these trends by providing the necessary test functionality to support all of these services in one integrated module. Weighing less than 15 pounds and operating on battery power for up to two hours at 10 Gb/s line rates, the TB/MTS 8000 is conveniently sized and designed for field test applications.

The TB/MTS 8000 Transport module’s Ethernet configuration allows for Ethernet and IP test capabilities from all Ethernet interfaces – 10/100/1000 copper, optical Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), and 10GigE LAN-Phy and WAN-Phy. Key test applications of the TB/MTS 8000 include connectivity, throughput, and quality of service (QoS) testing for emerging IP networks. The TB/MTS 8000 also provides RFC 2544 testing for verification of Ethernet and IP conformance to service level agreements (SLAs).

The TB/MTS 8000 features a full dual-port capability for 10/100/1000 copper and optical GigE interfaces – with two transmitters (TX) and two receivers (RX) – allowing for the simultaneous testing of two Ethernet/VLAN or IP circuits. These circuits may be provisioned for two fully independent customers, or they may represent two routes in a single network.

The dual-port capability of the TB/MTS 8000 Transport module enables field technicians to perform three important types of testing during turn-up and first-line of maintenance:
– Simultaneous Circuit Testing: Testing of two independent circuits concurrently
– Network Element Wrap Testing: Testing an element from the client to the network side
– In-Service Troubleshooting: Monitoring from two different directions on the circuit
Dual-Port Test Applications
Simultaneous Circuit Testing
Each of the TB/MTS 8000 Transport module’s two Ethernet ports has its own transmitter and receiver, both of which are able to connect to the customer’s switc or router. This enables field technicians to test separate Ethernet/VLAN or IP connections through the network.

In a multi-site network, technicians can use the TB/MTS 8000 to test two routes independently of one another. If the service is straightforward Ethernet transport, meaning no switching occurs, the traffic can be returned to the origination point by a simple hard loop at the far-end destination point. If the traffic is switched at the MAC (layer 2) or IP (layer 3) layers, then another TB/MTS 8000 test instrument is required to perform the loop at the far end. In the loopback testing scenario, the TB/MTS 8000 takes the source and destination MAC or IP addresses of the transmitting Ethernet frame or IP packet and swaps them, thereby ensuring that the originating traffic travels properly through the network back to its origination point. In addition to testing the connectivity of each route, the TB/MTS 8000 enables technicians to test the performance of specific class of service (CoS) applications, using VLAN-based or TOS/DSCP-based traffic prioritization schemes.
Testing Parallel Virtual Connections Simultaneously
The TB/MTS 8000 Transport module also enables technicians to test two routes between the same origination point and the same termination point. If a customer is experiencing different delays on two parallel routes, the TB/MTS 8000 can be used to establish two VLAN or IP connections, with different tags and user priorities on each port, to a remote site. This test setup allows for verification of the round trip delay (RTD) on each path independently to determine if the delay is the same on both routes, and to verify/compare the delay on the two different routes.
Testing Two Independent Routes Simultaneously
When installing service to two separate customers, service providers only need one dual-port TB/MTS 8000 Transport module to perform installation testing. The TB/MTS 8000 emulates the customer’s switch/router, sends IEEE-complaint Ethernet traffic, and performs RFC 2544 tests for both end customers. This allows the service provider to consistently and repeatedly test the Ethernet traffic at every route and to save time by turning-up two customer circuits simultaneously
Network Element Wrap Testing
The TB/MTS 8000 Transport module also supports network element wrap testing. This enables technicians to pre-qualify a switch or router before bringing it into service. Full Gigabit Ethernet (1 GigE) throughput testing can be accomplished by connecting a single TB/MTS 8000 to two separate ports on both sides of the network element – client side and network side.

Buying, Selling, Trading JDSU T-BERD MTS 8000

In addition, sub-rate line cards can be verified at different rates other than the network rate. For example, technicians can connect one TB/MTS 8000 port to the 10/100 Mb/s client card and the other TB/MTS 8000 port to the 1 GigE (1000 Mb/s) network card and perform throughput testing through the network element. This ensures that the network element backplane can sufficiently buffer and pass incoming traffic, without dropping any frames/packets. The TB/MTS 8000 can perform RFC 2544 testing to verify the configuration of the network element and the throughput of its line cards, as well as ensure consistent backplane functionality in both directions.

With this developing market trend, the TB/MTS 8000 Transport module is well-suited to enable technicians to use one test set to turn up services ranging from 10/100/1000 copper Ethernet, optical GigE, and optical 10 GigE – all from a single module. In addition, with its dual-port configuration, the TB/MTS 8000 provides a comprehensive and robust turn-up tool, thereby minimizing follow-on installation and maintenance issues.

Applications

  • Installing, commissioning and maintaining E1 circuits and multiplexers
  • Commissioning and maintainng datacom and V.24 modem circuits
  • Commissioning Frame Relay services
  • Installing and maintaining GSM circuits

This powerful tester includes a full set of measurements to install, commission and troubleshoot E1 and data circuits, along with the services that run over them.

Installation tests require basic out-of-service Bit Error Rate (BER) testing to assess cabling integrity. Full commissioning requires extended BER testing to international standards, as well as stress testing and complete assessment of link performance with respect to error and alarm reporting.

For successful maintenance, rapid identification of the current line status is critical to the speedy resolution of problems. Specific services (such as Frame Relay and GSM) have their own testing requirements, and require a tailored solution to ensure satisfactory operation.

Functions

  • E1 and n x 64k BERT with Autoconfigure and G.821, G.826 and M.2100 testing
  • Clear OK/Status Page
  • Multi-interface capability: V.24/RS232, V.11/X.24, V.35, V.36/RS449, G.703 (2048/704kbit/s), G.703 co-directional
  • Frame Relay commissioning tools, turn-up, PING and Fox
  • Multiplexer tests include MUX/ DEMUX and A-D/D-A measurements
  • Special sub-rates (HCM, X.50, V.110)

Features such as Autoconfigure and the ‘Big OK’ result screen make it easy to use with a minimum of training. Quality of Service can be measured with G.821, G.826 or M.2100. E1 signal quality measurements include jitter, level and pulse shape. Datacom interface control signals can be monitored and set.

V.24 modem tests include dial-up, autoanswer, distortion measurement and BER. Other important features include round trip delay measurements on E1 and datacom circuits and E1 drop and insert. Comprehensive service testing is possible using dedicated options.

Easy to Use

The EDT-135 has been designed with the user in mind. As well as being lightweight and comfortable to hold and carry, all testers feature large LCD screens with integral backlight for the most demanding testing environments. If you wish to self-support the tester, the integral two-position backstand/carry handle can easily be folded out, and can also be configured to suspend the instrument for hands-free viewing.

Test results are displayed in a concise, graphical format with our recognised ‘Big OK’ when no errors are present. Multiple language support is standard and comprehensive alarm and error status LEDs give clear indication of problems, even from a distance. And, as you’d expect, all results data can be stored for later analysis or printed to an external printer with a single keypress.

Autoconfigure
The Autoconfigure feature greatly simplifies instrument set-up. A test can be started on framed or unframed traffic using just 2 key-presses. For a framed signal, the instrument can determine the framing type, timeslot allocation and test pattern type.

Buying, Selling, Trading Acterna JDSU EDT-135

Gelbrich Synchronization
The patented Gelbrich Synchronization method enables synchronization on a test pattern to be maintained and accurate BER measurement to be made even in the presence of rapid bursts of errors. It also enables differentiation to be made between bit slips and bit errors.

Result Storage and Printing
The EDT-135 has 8 test memories for the storage of text and histogram results, for viewing or printing at a later time. Printing of results is supported through the serial port. A setup screen enables the instrument to be set up for a range of printers.

Programmable Timers
The instrument can be programmed to start a test at a specified date and time for a selectable duration.

Remote Operation
The instrument is compatible with the DTM-32 remote operation solution.

Battery/Mains Operation
8-10 hour battery life using rechargeable and exchangeable batteries. Long duration testing can be achieved with a.c. mains power.

Software Option Download
The testing capability of the EDT-135 can be greatly extended by downloading a range of software options. Applicable options include Signal Level Measurement, Pulse Shape Analysis, Jitter, Large Frequency Offset of Transmit Clock, Frame Relay, HCM, GSM, Enhanced Datacom Tests and Voice Channel Noise Measurement.

Instrument Applications

E1 Service Turn-up

Availability and performance of an E1 link can be established using either an intrusive or a non-intrusive test. The EDT-135 can be connected via 75/120 connectors using Hi-Z termination or at a protected monitor point. A typical simple E1 test will take no longer than 30 seconds, the OK screen quickly indicates when an E1 service is present and error-free. G.826/M.2100 test sequences can then be run, and the results displayed, stored and printed.

n x 64kbit/s Timeslot Analysis
64kbit/s timeslots are grouped within the E1 frame to give endcustomers intermediate data speeds such as 128 or 256kbit/s. The EDT-135 can perform BER analysis on bundles of n x 64kbit/s slots, and drop and insertn x 64 kbit/s to an external protocol analyser via V.11.

G.826 and M.2100 Analysis
G.826 is the ITU-T recommendation for error performance of international digital paths at or above the Primary Rate. The complementary M.21xx series permits rigorous testing of PDH links but in shorter time periods. Both methods are included as standard software modules in the EDT-135 tester. The following screens illustrate the summary results from G.826 and M.2100 tests.

E1 Service Troubleshooting
An extended bit error test will determine whether a periodic fault is causing problems. Electrical equipment such as airconditioning may cause problems at regular times in the day. Error histograms make it possible to identify external events which can be isolated as causes of the problem.

Faults in an E1 line can be caused by low signal, pulse distortion or jitter.

If loss of signal (LOS) or similar alarms are indicated by a network element, level measurement and pulse shape tests can easily be made to determine where the fault exists in a link, by examining the signal condition.

A low or distorted signal received by a network element would indicate a problem with the preceding element or the interconnecting cables.

Excessive jitter can result in bit errors, loss of frame synchronization or similar faults. Where these faults exist, jitter measurements can be performed to determine if jitter is the cause, and also to discover at which point in the system the jitter reaches unacceptable levels.

Selling JDSU RPM-2000 – We Buy New Used RPM-2000 (‘s) Top Dollar Paid!

If you’re looking to Sell JDSU RPM-2000 PathTrak Spectrum Analyzer Module

RPM2000 PathTrak module

Features:

  • Fully programmable measurement plans
  • Scans all 8 ports 5 to 10 times per second
  • Measures transient noise as short as 1 microsceond
  • Optimized monitoring plans for specific reverse services applications
  • Real-time fast spectrum trouble-shooting without interrupting monitoring
  • Three unique features ensure that all relevant ingress is captured
    • – Ultra fast parallel scan rate
    • – 1 microsecond burst detection
    • – Selectable dwell time
  • In-service C/N measurements on TDMA cable modem signals

The RPM2000 module is an eight port, high-speed return path spectrum analyzer, which is optimized for the noise and ingress analysis and monitoring functions of the PathTrak Performance Monitoring System. Each of the eight ports is an independent and isolated test port. The RPM2000 module switches automatically between the eight ports and measures spectrum performance on each port individually.

The measurement settings and functions of the RPM2000 consist of all of the typical spectrum analyzer settings, such as resolution bandwidth, video bandwidth, dwell time, span, marker control, max hold, min hold, peak search, and zero span. The RPM2000 provides flexibility in order to adjust these parameters in monitoring plans or interactive analysis according to individual preferences.

Fast Scanning–Catches the Most Transient Noise and Ingress

The RPM2000 consists of a single spectrum analyzer measurement receiver with eight individual input ports that are switched into the receiver.

The overall measurement speed across the ports is optimized through the use of an integral high-speed switch, unique measurement algorithms, fast tuning DDS technology, and a new DSP hardware architecture.

In Monitoring mode, the measurement speed at a resolution of 300 kHz, monitoring all eight ports, reaches ten times per second for each port – that’s an equivalent rate of 80 scans per second. The speed is even faster if some of the ports are deactivated or if less than 150 frequency points per port are measured.

In addition, the RPM2000 is designed with a fast detector for measuring very fast transient noise, ingress, and bursty signals. The RPM2000 can reliably detect and measure bursts of noise as short as one microsecond in duration.

Buying, Selling, Trading JDSU RPM-2000

Flexible Measurement Plans to Adapt to User Preferences
Users have ultimate flexibility in programming the RPM2000 for realtime troubleshooting and monitoring. Measurement parameters can be varied for each individual port, allowing the user to program each of the eight ports on a single RPM2000 with different measurement plans. In addition, within an individual port, the measurement parameters can be varied by frequency, allowing different spans of the return spectrum to be scanned with different resolutions or certain spans of the return spectrum to be skipped altogether.

Expands and Scales with No Degradation in Performance

As part of the PathTrak Performance Monitoring System, the RPM2000 monitoring modules are VME-based cards that mount into a modular HCU control chassis (HCU400 or HCU1500). Thus, a monitoring system can be designed to serve the existing number of test points today and can then be expanded easily by adding additional RPM2000 modules. Furthermore, because each RPM2000 module is an independent spectrum analyzer receiver, adding modules to accommodate more test points does not adversely affect the overall system speed or performance.

Today, telecommunications, cable television, and data communications users appreciate the advantages of more portable test gear with expanded capabilities and a common user interface.

MTS 5100 Media Test Set
With the MTS 5100, Wavetek is one of the first companies to develop and market a modular OTDR that embodies the Universal Test Set concept. Based upon the latest RISC microprocessor interfacing with modular architecture, the MTS provides excellent performance and enhanced field modularity. MTS provides a comprehensive set of optical test functions for incoming test, fiber plant construction, splicing, cable acceptance, and cable restoration. MTS tests short or long haul fiber networks in singlemode or multimode applications. Two optical module bays allow the user to configure and upgrade the tester in the field, while the familiar user interface and integrated help functions simplify testing.

Multiple Test Functions In A Single Unit

The MTS is designed to integrate several field test functions in a single unit. Two slots are provided for optical modules, and the user can mix and match the test configuration according to the testing needs at hand. Typical MTS configurations include a four window 850nm to 1550nm dual port multimode and singlemode OTDR, or a dual wavelength OTDR with a complete set of insertion loss tests with integrated light source and power meter.

Complete User Flexibility
With over nine available OTDR modules, the user is equipped to
cost-effectively test short and long spans of fiber at all operating wavelengths with maximum precision. The 1625nm OTDR module is ideal for systems applications where fiber is tested outside wavelengths used for traffic. To ease fiber tracing in multifiber cables, the visible light source option illuminates and identifies the fiber connected to the source. An additional module allows users to combine a light source, power meter, and optical talk set providing all necessary functions for effective insertion loss testing.

Upgradable Investment
The MTS modular concept reduces the number of different testers required for the job and eases instrument stock monitoring. Whether you need test equipment today for short or long haul cables, point-to-point or complex branching systems, or multimode or singlemode networks, MTS provides both an immediate solution and an upgrade path for future transport technologies.

Optimized for Field Use
Optical test equipment needs to couple high performance with maximum portability to be productive in the field. MTS has a small footprint to ease testing in areas with limited access such as crowded wiring closets or underground enclosures. A hardened outer case with protective bumpers ensures that the unit survives even the harshest conditions.

Efficient Testing of High Count Cables
MTS provides extremely rapid sweep times, straightforward and vivid presentation of the fiber trace and results, and fast storage possibilities with SRAM or other internal memory devices. These features are particularly useful for fiber plant commissioning where the requirement for two-way measurements at both wavelengths demands high productivity.

Extended Battery Life Improves Productivity
Testing high fiber count cables requires a unit that can operate for extended periods on battery. With a maximum operating time of 16 hours, MTS is at the top of its class in this category. Its internal battery compartment accommodates up to two removable, rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride cells.

Simple User Interface Reduces Training Requirements
MTS has a familiar, intuitive user interface, requiring little to no training for experienced OTDR users, and shortening the learning curve for novices. Simple direct access keys make primary test functions available to the user at the push of a button for maximum productivity, while results are logically organized on the large color display for easy interpretation.

High Performance for the Novice and the Expert
For the novice, simply pressing the START button immediately auto configures the measurement parameters for optimal test performance. For more experienced users, advanced trace analysis functions are also accessible. After acquiring traces, a variety of standard data communications interfaces support download for analysis or direct printing, making the MTS a complete workstation.

Maximum Speed and Precision
MTS provides the user with an unprecedented level of speed, processing power, resolution, and range. Its extremely short deadzones can be used for pinpointing faults close to cable junctions or splice points. Impressive dynamic range means that even the longest fibers can be characterized with confidence.

Flexible Data Storage and Retrieval
Results can be imported and exported in Bellcore format and other standard industry formats, allowing easy integration into existing databases. Data can be stored in the standard internal memory (up to 200 traces), or on internal floppy or hard disk. Optional 1GB hard disk drive capacity is useful for commissioning and acceptance tests on high fiber count cables, while an auto-incrementing file utility simplifies storage and retrieval.

W Flash Mini-OTDR Mini-OTDR Wavetek’s hand-held Flash mini- OTDRs set new standards in OTDR performance, weighing less than 4 lbs. while conducting most of the functions of full-sized OTDRs. Named fiber optic Product of the Year in ’94, the Flash is designed to fully maximize field performance. It features a rugged protective case, a scratch-resistent front cover, a back-lit LCD display, and an optional rubber shock-absorbing case protector. In addition, its extremely low power consumption allows over 8 hours of continuous field use.

With its easy to use 6 button front panel and user-friendly interface, the Flash is designed to meet the fiber testing needs of both the occassional and experienced user. The Flash is currently available in singlemode and high resolution models (to be available in multimode). It is completely software driven and field configurable, providing users with an array of testing options, from fast fault location to more advanced fiber link commissioning.

The Flash’s Validation operating system consists of three modes: maintenance, construction and validation. Each mode is loaded into the unit from memory cards, which provides greater flexibility and is more cost-effective for customers.

Flash Maintenance

The maintenance mode is most commonly used for the maintenance of fiber links. The user’s main goal is to locate faults and repair them. When in this mode, measurements are completely automatic. When an acquisition is started, the Flash will automatically determine the required parameters, control the injection level and pulsewidth, and provide a table of results.

After the fault has been located and repaired, confirmation of the exact location and repair quality can be confirmed. This information may then be printed as required. In addition, the Flash’s low attenuation detection (0.05 dB) and reflectance levels allow users to obtain extremely detailed results for a concise summary of an event. Flash Construction The construction mode is used primarily by those installing fiber optic networks.

Technicians may perform analysis of a link using an automatic table of results or a one button toggle to a trace view. The unit always allows the user to perform manual measurements. When studying a trace, users have several options. The advanced zoom feature, using the x and y axes, allows detailed analysis of events at specific locations on the fiber. If such detailed analysis is not necessary, the Hunt function enables users to toggle directly to the next event on a trace and then zoom in for a closer look. All data collected in the field may be printed and stored immediately using either the internal memory or the built-in PCMCIA card slot and memory cards. Data may also be downloaded, using the RS232 port, directly to a personal computer or printer.

The memory cards also make instrument upgrades quick and easy. Flash Validation The validation mode generally is used for commissioning and other detailed analysis of a fiber link. When in this mode, users can make testing virtually automatic using the Macro feature. Users may shorten multiple tests, at different parameter settings, into a single, one-button test using the Macro feature. This assures repeatability and increases productivity.
