PMD440

NetTest’s PMD440 measures a form of pulse dispersion which can cause the optical receiver to be unable to interpret the signal correctly and result in high bit error rates. PMD can dramatically decrease a fiber optic network’s performance, particularly those networks operating at high data rates such as OC192 (STM-64) or OC768 (STM-256).

Benefits

  • Allow customers to provide a high data rate on fiber
  • Provides pre-qualification of existing spans for upgrades
  • Certify cable quality and verify installation practices

Detailed Product Description
Polarization Mode Dispersion, or PMD, is a form of pulse dispersion which can cause the optical receiver to be unable to interpret the signal correctly and result in high bit error rates. PMD can dramatically decrease a fiber optic network’s performance, particularly those networks operating at high data rates such as OC192 (STM-64) or OC768 (STM-256).

In addition to the inherent, random polarization properties of fiber, stress and other environmental effects (such as changes in temperature) will directly affect the severity of PMD, causing it to change over time. In fact, the amount of PMD present when a fiber is first drawn is likely to differ from the PMD present after cabling or placement. PMD’s varying nature makes it crucial to test installed fiber before upgrading to higher data rates or installing new high data rate systems.

Taking PMD measurements is easy.
The PMD440’s ease of use allows accurate measurements to be obtained with minimal training. The light source is placed at the far end of the fiber under test, while the receiver and PC are located at the measurement site. Continuous network monitoring of suspect cables is available via the PMD440’s remote testing capability.

The PMD440 has a 0.06-80 ps typical measurement range, as well as a 40 dB dynamic range enabling measurements of long haul systems. The PMD440 is also one of the fastest PMD test instruments in the world, an important consideration when entire networks must be tested before an upgrade.

The PMD440 system consists of:

  • PMD440 receiver
  • PC laptop controller with a Windows® operating system
  • Polarized LED light source operating at 1310, 1550 or 1625 nm

Whether you’re planning, building, or upgrading a fiber optic network, chromatic dispersion is a factor that must be considered. Chromatic dispersion is a signal distortion within a fiber optic cable which can have severe bandwidth-limiting effects on the cable or render it unusable for high bit rate DWDM transmission. While it can be compensated to maximize the bandwidth of a cable, chromatic dispersion needs to be accurately measured and addressed before the link can be operational.

NetTest offers the industry’s only field-portable system that measures chromatic dispersion in both C- and L-bands wherever and whenever it’s needed. The FD440 is optimized for fast chromatic dispersion measurements in the 1310, 1550 and 1625 nm windows. This easy-to-use system features separate transmit and receive units, allowing you to efficiently map and upgrade an optical network.

Why test for chromatic dispersion?
Chromatic dispersion is an intrinsic characteristic of optical fibers resulting from different wavelengths of light exhibiting various propagation speeds. Since optical transmitters do not output a single wavelength, but rather emit a narrow range of wavelengths, the signals they output are susceptible to the effects of chromatic dispersion. After traveling through an optical fiber, the received signal appears broadened or smeared. These effects accumulate with distance and if not compensated for, they may result in intersymbol interference and an increased bit error rate. Today’s long haul networks span large distances. Consequently, these systems require accurate chromatic dispersion characterization and compensation. By testing for chromatic dispersion before a network becomes operational, proper dispersion compensation may be implemented before network performance is compromised.

Field measurements
The chromatic dispersion characteristics of different fiber types can prevent operation at OC-48 (STM-16) and OC-192 (STM-64) data rates, and can inhibit the deployment of DWDM systems. In many cases, the only way to determine the dispersion characteristics of installed links is through direct field measurement. The FD440 is fully portable and optimized for use by field personnel.

The easiest way to test for chromatic dispersion
The lightweight FD440 tests both the C- and L-bands for chromatic dispersion in the field, the network’s control center, or wherever you need it. Its familiar Windows based software operates with a single press of a button and is easily customized for a variety of test parameters.

EXFO BRT-320A

EXFO’s BRT-320A is a field-ready return loss test set.  It comes equipped with rapidly stabilizing TEC lasers and low-drift photodetectors to ensure constant optical return loss (ORL) measurements year after year.

Built-In User-Friendliness
Use the BRT-320A to read backreflection from 0 dB to -70 dB and easily store up to 300 readings in a non-volatile memory. ORL readings appear directly on the large, backlit LCD. An ORL zero function accounts for incidental backreflections before the point of measurement and complies with Bellcore optical continuous wave reflectometer (OCWR) requirements. In User Calibration mode, you can calibrate the unit to a known reflection.

Other features include three-way powering (rechargeable NiCd battery pack, 9 V battery, AC adapter/charger), 0.01 dB resolution, ±0.1 dB linearity, internal InGaAs detector, low-battery indicator and a protective holster with shoulder strap.

Reveal Return Loss Problems
Many digital and analog fiber systems require ORL characterization. ORL along a fiber span is a combination of Rayleigh scattering and Fresnel reflections. Together, these phenomena can reduce fiber system performance and increase bit error rate (BER) by degrading transmitter stability. The BRT-320A measures cumulative link return loss and individual component reflectance to reveal potential ORL problems before they seriously affect your applications.

Versatile
The BRT-320A is ideal for local and long-distance Telco, CATV, utility, broadband and transmission equipment manufacturing applications. These environments often require complete network ORL characterization and component reflectance verification. The BRT-320A also functions as a stable, continuous-wavelength light source for attenuation measurements. Other applications include fiber component and cable manufacturing.

Optimized for field measurements on single-mode systems
During installation testing and maintenance work on all sorts of single-mode fiber optical systems (e.g. long-distance telecom systems, passive optical networks for FITL applications), a highly stable output power level is required along with a wide dynamic range (attenuation measurements). To obtain the desired degree of measurement accuracy, a light source is needed on the transmit end which can launch sufficient optical power into the fiber. With their -7 dBm output power level, the OLS-15 Optical Laser Source is ideal for these applications. In conjunction with the OLP-15 Optical Power Meter, they provide features which greatly simplify installation, maintenance and troubleshooting/ repair of these systems. OLS-15 is a dual-wavelength source for 1310 and 1550 nm with a common output for both wavelengths.TWINtest: Simultaneous measurement of attenuation at 1310 and 1550 nm
With its common output for both wavelengths, the OLS-15 dualwavelength source can transmit signals at 1310 and 1550 nm in alternation (TWINtest mode). The OLP-15 meter can then detect and evaluate these signals at the correct wavelength. This makes it very easy to characterize a device under test (DUT) at both wavelengths in a single step.Auto-? mode for automatic wavelength detection on the power meter
All of the OLS sources include the Auto-l mode; an identifier is transmitted to indicate the current wavelength. On the receiving end, the OLP-15 reads the wavelength identifier and automatically switches to the proper wavelength. Erroneous measurements can be avoided using this mode; fiber identification is another possibility.Fiber identification using modulated signals
If the sources are used with a meter such as the OLP-10 (in place of the OLP-15) or another industry-standard fiber identifier, the output signal can be modulated at 270 Hz, 1 kHz or 2 kHz. The modulation frequency is then detected and displayed on the receiving end.Universal interchangeable adapter system
The universal adapter system handles the common fiber optical connector systems, such as FC, SC and DIN. The internal connector is also easily accessible for inspection and cleaning. A dustcap is included to protect the optical connector.Rugged, shockproof and splashproof housing
The laser sources have a form-fitted, shockproof and splashproof housing which provides the mechanical ruggedness needed to handle tough conditions in the field. The membrane keypad is waterproof. A fold-out stand is provided on the back of the sources.Battery or a.c. power
The laser sources can be powered with dry batteries or NiCd cells. They can be operated for typ. 28 h on dry batteries or typ. 9 h on NiCd cells (i.e. more than one workday). When a separate AC adapter is used, the instrument can be AC powered and NiCd batteries fitted in the instrument can also be recharged. Specifications OLA-15B
